Lungs / Health Issues Flashcards
what happens during gaseous exchange in the lungs
oxygen transferred to blood stream for respiration and carbon dioxide transferred out of the blood to remove waste products
where in the lungs does gaseous exchange take place
alveoli
what surrounds the alveoli and why
capillaries to maintain a good blood supply which maintains the concentration gradient
define health
state of physical and mental well-being
define risk factor
any attribute that increases likelihood of developing a disease
what is the difference between a benign tumour and a malignant tumour
benign tumours are not cancerous so they don’t spread around the body
malignant tumours are cancerous and spread through the blood
what is the difference between the cell cycle of a healthy cell and the cell cycle of a cancerous cell
healthy cell cycles safe controlled and replicate DNA then dies
cancerous cell cycles are uncontrolled and a result of genetic mutation and doesn’t die
how do secondary tumours occur
secondary tumours occur through metastasis where a cancer cell breaks away from the original cancer cell, travels through the blood and forms new tumour
