- KNOW the Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC) classification system for officers and the role specialty training plays in AFSC classification.
a. AFI 36-2101 (Classifying Military Personnel)
b. MEMORIZE THIS ***EX: C11F3B… C=commander, 1=Career Group (Operations), 1=Career Field (Pilot), F=Functional Area (Fighter Pilot), 3=Qualification Level, B=A-10 Pilot
c. Prefixes: Identify a more specific duty within a specialty.
d. Suffixes: Used to identify the type of equipment the Officer uses.
- Know the 10 requirements for position vacancy promotions. [ASK APT]
a. MUST BE IN ACTIVE STATUS
b. MUST HAVE COMPLETED A PREVIOUS GOOD YEAR
c. Commander’s Recommendation
d. Assigned Position requires a higher grade
e. Sole occupant of UMD position
f. Possess fully qualified duty AFSC
g. Completed required PME
h. OPR must indicate ready and capable of assuming responsibility
i. Must score a 75% or above on current PT test
j. Must meet minimum Time-in-Grade
- Know Reserve Officer Personnel Management Act (ROPMA) time in grade requirements for mandatory promotion. READ P 284
a. Minimum Time in Grade: Major – 4 years, Lt Col – 4 years, Col – 3 years 2ND LT=2YRS / CAP=2YRS
b. Maximum Time in Grade: 1st Lt – 24/42 months, Captain – 24 months/5 years, Major – 7 years, Lt Col – 7 years, Col – N/A
- Describe the individual responsibilities for ensuring a productive military career.
a. Continuing Education
i. Civilian Education
- Bachelor’s Degree must be completed within 5 years (ANG Only)
- Advanced degrees: no longer masked
- Language training
ii. Technical Training
- Mandatory Schools: Usually enter within 18 months of commissioning. Waivers are possible for some prior service
- Optional Schools: Increase understanding within a specialty. EX: DEOMI, Protocol School

- Explain the purpose of PME and how it differs from AFSC training.
a. Prepares officers for increasing levels of responsibilities

- Know the phases of Officer Professional Military Education (PME).
a. Three Phases: PDE, IDE, & SDE
b. PDE (Primary Development Education) / SOS (Squadron Officer School): 1st PME School. Captains with 4-7 years of service.
c. IDE (Intermediate Development Education): Intermediate PME. Majors with < 15 years of commissioned service.
d. SDE (Senior Development Education) / AWC (Air War College): Senior Level PME, Promotion Recommendation Form (PRF), OPR documents mission related performance, Primary record used for promotion board, Supervisory Function – Ratee Input Allowed
