  1. Describe the five personal conflict management styles.
A

a. Forcing: an attempt to satisfy your own needs at another’s expense (weakest approach)
b. Accommodating: Satisfy other’s needs while neglecting your own (martyr)
c. Avoiding: neglects interests of all parties
d. COMPROMISE: middle ground, neither party satisfied nor dissatisfied, Compromise: middle ground, neither party satisfied nor dissatisfied
e. COLLABORATION: attempts to address concerns of BOTH PARTIES

  1. Identify sources of conflict.
A

a. Personal Differences
i. Daily experiences are not judged on a common set of values
ii. Conflicts tend to be emotionally charged
iii. “People-focused” rather than “issue-focused”
b. Informational Deficiencies
i. Instructions may be interpreted differently
ii. More factual & straightforward
iii. Not about values & do not involve emotions
c. Role Incompatibility
i. Different entities have different goals.
ii. A common superior usually has to mediate.
d. Environmental Stress
i. Shortage of resources.
ii. Uncertainty.
