What are the structures in the upper airway?
Nasal cavity, oral cavity, pharynx, and epiglottis.
What are the structures in the lower airway?
Right lung, left lung, larynx, trachea, bronchi/bronchioles, alveoli.
Most prevalent URI cause
Common cold/influenza
URI signs/symptoms
Common cold: nasal congestion and reddened pharynx with mucous streaking.
Influenza: intense pain, extreme tiredness fever and nausea, body and joint pain.
Pneumonia
Inflammation of the lungs, usually results in water getting in the lungs. Both bacterial and viral.
Pneumonia signs/symptoms
Cough, chest pain, SOB, general discomfort and lack of energy, poor appetite, fever, tachycardia, and tachypnea.
Pneumonia treatment
NSAID or acetaminophen, decongestant, cough suppressant, increased fluid intake, antibiotics, bronchodilators, bed rest.
Asthma precipitating factors
Emotional upsets, physical exertion, cold weather, allergic components, aspirin and NSAIDs.
Asthma treatments
Broncho dilators or MDIs, intravenous fluids, supplemental oxygen.
Respitory complaint red flags
Fever greater than 101, SOB, abnormal breath sounds, abnormal pulse oximetry, accessory muscle use.
