What is the iris?
The colored part of the eye between the cornea and lens that controls the amount of light entering the eye.
What is the sclera?
White of the eye that protects it and keeps its shape, connected to the six muscles that make it move/look around.
What is the pupil?
Opening into the iris, window which light passes through.
What is the retina?
The optic nerve containing rods and cones that allow us to see.
What is the cornea?
Transparent and colorless layer covering the pupil and iris.
Red flags of eye complaints.
Visual loss, history of trauma, foreign body, photophobia, severe pain.
What is an eye chart called?
Snellen chart
What do the top and bottom numbers of a vision score mean?
Top is distance from the chart, bottom is distance a normal eye can read the line.
What are the abbreviations for right and left eye?
O.S .for left eye, O.D. for right eye, O.U. for both eyes.
What is conjunctivitis?
Inflammation of the conjunctiva (the mucus around the front of the eye), usually because of a chemical irritation, infection, or allergies.
What are the external parts of the ear?
Auricle or pinna, tragus, and external auditory canal.
What are the red flags of ear complaints?
Fever of 101 or higher, embedded foreign objects, history of trauma, hearing loss.
What size speculum should be used?
The largest the war can accommodate.
What percentage of earaches are dental problems?
50%
What is cerumen?
To much wax in the ears, causes hearing loss and sometimes dizziness.
What is otitis externa?
Inflammation of infection of the external auditory canal, usually caused by water in the ear.
What are the red flags of sinus complaints?
Fever of 101 or higher, severe pain, visual changes, and mental/cognitive changes.
What are the sinuses you can physically examine?
The frontal and maxillary sinuses.
What is the procedure for epistaxis?
Sit up and lean forward, tip head down and pinch entire nose for 10-15 minutes.
What are the red flags of throat complaints?
Breathing difficulty, difficulty swallowing, fever of 101 or higher, tonsillar exudates. Midline deviation of the uvula.
