What is the purpose of subcutaneous injections?
For slower absorption rate than IM. Absorption rate is 15-30 minutes. Duration is hours to weeks.
What parts of the syringe are sterile?
The needle adapts and shaft of the plunge.
What are the factors for determining needle gauge?
Type of injection, size of patient, and injection location.
What is the purpose of IM injections?
Rapid absorption rate (10-20 minutes), administering viscous or irritating medication, and for large doses.
Preferred injection sights for IM injection?
Deltoid, glute, and vastus lateralis (lateral thigh).
Recommended sight for intradermal injections?
Inner forearm, back of upper arm, on the back below the shoulder blades.
What is the lumen on a needle?
The inside of the needle.
What is the hub on the needle?
The attachment point to the syringe.
What parts of the plunger are sterile?
The needle adapter and shaft.
What are the determining factors in needle selection?
Tire of injection, side of patient, injection type.
The three time medication must be verified.
- When it is obtained from storage
- When withdrawing the medication
- When returning it to storage
What are the needle lengths and gauges for intradermal injection?
1/4-1/2 inch length, 25-27 gauge.
What is the angle for a intradermal injection?
5-15 degrees
