What are interventions for Impaired Physical Mobility?
-Treat pain before the activity
-PT referral
-Obtain assistive devices
What type of client education can be given to pt using a cane?
-Hold the cane with the hand on the stronger side of the body to provide max support.
Wheelchair Safety
-Put WC on the client’s stronger side
-Lock WC
-Raise the footplate when transfessing
What are some assessments of self-care (ADL’s)?
-Feeding
-Bathing
-Dressing
-Toileting
-Instrumental (Able to use kitchen supplies, washer, dryer, etc. safely)
What are some related factors to impaired mobility?
-Fatigue
-Decreased visual and motor ability, muscle weakness
-Pain
-Confusion
-External devices (Casts, braces, IV equipment)
What are some Adverse Effects of Immobility?
-Decreased myocardial performance
-Venous stasis; thrombus formation
-Dependent edema (sitting for too long)
What is Orthostatic (postural) Hypotension?
When a person changes from a horizontal to a vertical position, blood pools in the lower extremities and BP drops
What is the Increased use of the Valsalva Maneuver?
Holding the breath and straining against a closed glottis
Can result in cardiac arrhythmias
What is Disuse Syndrome?
Susceptible to deterioration of body systems as the result of prescribed of prescribed or unavoidable musculoskeletal inactivity, which may compromise health
What is Circadian Rhythms?
About 24hr rhythmic biologic clocks in our body
What are the Stages of Sleep?
-NREM (Non-Rapid Eye Movement) = Restful; most of the sleep
-REM (Rapid Eye Movement) = Highly active
What are the Cycles of Sleep?
-Wake
-NREM 1 (very light)
-NREM 2 (light)
-NREM 3 (deep)
-NREM 2

How long does a Sleep Cycle last?
1.5 hrs in adults
(4-6 cycles of sleep per 7-8hrs)
