Long term memory Flashcards
Explain declarative memory (a division of LTM)
Refers to explicit memory and is dependent on the hippocampus and can be subdivided into two categories:
1. episodic: encoding memories of events and experiences. mental time travel (thinking back and ahead (planning))
2. semantic: facts and general knowledge (conceptual and abstract)
Explain non declarative memory (a division of LTM)
refers to implicit memory and is independent of the hippocampus and can be subdivided into two categories:
1. Procedural memory: learning and performance of motor and cognitive skills
2. Classical conditioning
What is priming and repeated priming
Phenomenon where a previous exposure to the same or similar stimuli results in a change in the ability to identify a stimuli.
what is repeated priming
Repetition priming: prior exposure to the word in lexical decision task will make that word easier to respond to next time it is encountered
Associative semantic priming
presentation of a stimuli facilitates the subsequent identification of a similar stimuli (e.g word nurse allows a easier identification of doctor)
Amnesia
Amnesia is categories as a deficit in memory caused by factors (brain damage, disease, drug abuse) that affect particular memory systems
Differentiate between 2 types of amnesia
- Retrograde amnesia: inability to remember knowledge before the brain impact with older memories being less affected
- Anteograde amnesia: inability to remember knowledge after the brain impact and thus learn information but is capable of procedural learning
Explain the role of the hippocampus in the consolidation of declarative memory
