Lecture 1 Flashcards
what is cognition?
Cognition is an active process involving mental processes where knowledge is being aquired and used
what does it mean by mental representation
How infomation in our minds are encoded, stored and recontructed
explain the perceptual cognitive cycle
is a concept proposed by ulrich Niesser explaining how cognition is an ongoing cycle of trying to create meaning and sense of our environment. It suggests how our experience is a combination of the perceptual present and cognitive past
Explain what a cogniser (cognitive agent) is
is a system that act/coordinates its behaviour with envoronemtnal features that arent always present like goal-making and mental representations are used to in replacement to allow the formation of concepts.
Who can be defined as a cogniser?
categorised as having the ability to interact with their environment through detecting changes, acting on it and therefore gain/learn information. They can construct mental models of their environmental structure and have the flexibility to adapt their models in accordance to the feedback given about their behaviour that subsequently guides any future behaviour. inferenece are also used as a mechanism to make sense of their experience and are able to build a whole system where connections between concepts form.
Define sensititsation
an unconscious, nautral, automatic response causing us to be more alert and sensitive to a stimulus.
Habituation
Process when a new, sudden stimuli normalised as the NS learns to block/ignore the stimulus, mkaing it non-salient as habitual
Controversy with computer and AI technology
What is propositional representation?
Aka ‘language of the mind’ is a conceptual structure with a symbolic code that expresses relationships between concepts. In other words, the mind has ways to represent relationships which we just insert/slot our experiences into
Explain the concept of language
Language is essentially a fundamental abstract structure that is expressed in different forms. It is a way for the mind to represent relationship
