Localization Techniques Flashcards
Use of localization technique (why do we need it)
Foreign objects Root tips Supernumerary teeth Impacted teeth Separation of roots in multi root teeth
Methods of localization
Tube shift technique
Right angle technique
Purpose of Tube shift technique
Defines location of unknown object relative to position of known object
2 PA xrays used w/ diff horizontal or vertical angulations
Usually can be accomplished w/ FMS with no further exposures
Right angle technique
2 xrays taken at right angles to each other
Sometimes called cross sectional technique
Ex. Occlusal radiograph (film at right angle to periapical)
Synonyms for tube shift technique
Buccal object rule
SLOB rule
Clark’s rule
BAMA rule (buccal always moves away)
Tube shift technique
One PA radiograph taken
2nd PA radiograph taken: film stays in same position and tube head is shifted either mesial or distal in relation to the position of the previous radiograph
In tube shift technique, object is LINGUAL if…
Object of interest moved relative to the reference point in the SAME direction as the tube head
In tube shift technique, object is BUCCAL if…
The object of interest moved relative to the reference point in the OPPOSITE direction of the tube
