Localization Procedures and Mapping Flashcards
Magnetoencephalography (MEG)
mapping brain activity by recording magnetic fields produced by electrical activity of the brain
ECOG
Used in functionally mapping of the brain. Recommended frequency bandpass of .5-70Hz w/sensitivity of 30-50uV/mm
Direct Cortical stimulation
DCS used for cortical functional mapping and is considered the gold procedure to identify eloquent cortex that maximizes the patient’s functional outcome
What 2 critical details does brain MRI provide and what type of brain lesion does it best assess?
presumptive pathology, and precise anatomic location
What is MRI Tractopgraphy?
3D modeling technique used to visually represent neural tracts using data collected by diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), showing structural abnormalities of white matter pathways in the brain and spinal cord and allows for visual of language and memory networks in epilepsy
What is Functional MRI (fMRI)
Detects associated changes in blood flow, used for pre-surgical evaluation, noninvasive alternative to intraoperative cortical stimulation and WADA testing
What is Wada test?
Intracarotid sodium amobarbital procedure (ISAP) looks at language and memory on one side of the brain at a time
Name 2 noninvasive motor function mapping procedures
Transcranial magneticstimulation (TMS) and functional mri
What is Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan?
Imaging test that uses a radioactive tracer (FDG) which is radio-labeled to look for seizure based on hypometabolism
Laplacian montage
similar to common average reference montage but refers to the average of directly surrounding electrodes. Best for very focal discharges with high amplitude
What is Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT)?
Measures blood flow to the brain using a radiolabeled tracer. Hyper-perfusion
