Whitefly
Question
What are the damage symptoms of Whitefly?
Whitefly
- Glasshouse whitefly is a common sapfeeding pest - This reduces the vigour of the host plant
- Whiteflies excrete a sticky substance (honeydew) on foliage - which allows the growth of sooty moulds
Whitefly
Question
What are the host plants of Whitefly?
Whitefly
- Host plants include: Cucumber, Melon, Tomato, Pepper, Chrysanthemum, Gerbera, Pelargonium, Fuchsia, Poinsettia and Verbena.

Study Card
Life Cycle of Whitefly.
Whitefly
- Adults can live three weeks and are often found in mating pairs. Females are larger than males.
- A female can lay about 100 eggs in her lifetime, often in ‘fairy rings’ as she pivots around her feeding site.
- Eggs hatch into mobile crawlers after 6 days.
- Crawlers setttle at feeding site and lose the ability to walk. They insert their mouitparts into the leaf to feed on sap.
- Nymphs or ‘scale’ remain in place throughout immature development, about 16 days.
- Winged adults emerge from the nymphal cases, leaving empty skins ‘exuviae’ on the leaf.

Questions
What are some symptoms of Whitefly?
Whitefly
Symptoms
You may see the following symptoms
* If an infected plant is disturbed, clouds of insects (1.5mm) will fly up.
* Adult whitefly and the nymphs excrete sticky honeydew on the foliage, stems and fruits, which allows the growth of black sooty moulds
* You may also see flat, oval, creamy white scale-like nymphs on the underside of leaves
Whitefly
Questions
What are cultural controls regarding Whitefly?
Whitefly
Whitefly Cultural Controls
* Hang yellow sticky trap sheets above or among the plants to trap adult whitefly. - Indicator mainly
* Glasshouse whitefly can feed and breed on weeds so good weed control inside and around the glasshouse will remove alternate host plants
* Watch for signs of whitefly on new purchases as the pest is often first brought into a glasshouse on new plants.
* Good ventilation will help to check the growth of sooty moulds
Whitefly
Questions
What are some biological controls of Whitefly?
Whitefly
Whitefly Biological Controls
* This involves introducing tiny parasitic wasps, Encarsiaformosa, which attack the whitefly nymphs.
* The parasite is available by mail order from the suppliers of biological controls.
* It is important to introduce the parasite before plants are heavily infested as it cannot give instant control.
* Parasitised nymphs turn black so it is easy to monitor the progress of the control. As Encarsia is killed by most insecticides, avoid spraying with products that could harm the wasp.
