Liver and Pancreas- Gross Anatomy Flashcards
describe the lobation of the equine liver (5) and give general location
left lateral lobe
left medial lobe
quadrate lobe
right lobe
caudate lobe with caudate process
liver is skewed to the right side of the abdomen, pushed by stomach
does the horse have a gallbladder?
nope, but the liver does have a notch where the gallbladder would be
describe the lobation of the cow liver (4) and give general location
left lobe
quadrate lobe
right lobe
caudate lobe with both caudate and papillary processes
all lobes are on right side of cavity, pushed by rumen
where does the gallbladder hide in the cow?
under the quadrate lobe of the liver
describe the lobation of the canine liver (6) and give general location
left lateral lobe
left medial lobe
quadrate lobe
right lateral lobe
right medial lobe
caudate lobe with papillary and caudate processes
canine is the only species where the liver reaches all the way to the floor of the abdominal cavity (sternum) and is symmetrical on right and left sides of the cavity
sum up species differences of liver lobation
cows are simplest, with right and left lobes not subdivided; horses have a divided left lobe, and dogs have divided right and left lobes
horse caudate lobe only has a caudate process while dog and cow caudate lobe have both a caudate and a papillary process
if we think of the liver like a frying pancake, how can we describe the diaphragmatic and visceral surfaces?
diaphragmatic is the smooth side on the bottom/pan and the visceral surface is the bubbly top side facing caudally with all sorts of imperfections (structures)
where is the pancreas found?
in the proximal flexure of the duodenum
what are the parts of the pancreas?
right lobe, left lobe (toward stomach), body
where is the body of the pancreas located?
ventral to portal vein
give one species differences regarding the structure of the pancreas
in cows and dogs, the left and right lobes are separated away from each other; in a horse they are close together
describe hepatic drainage to the duodenum in all 3 species
drains from the liver to the bile duct to the major papilla of the duodenum
describe pancreatic drainage to the duodenum in the horse and dog; contrast to pancreatic drainage to duodenum in cows
in horses and dogs:
the pancreas drains both to the pancreatic duct which drains to the major papilla of the duodenum and to the accessory pancreatic duct which drains to the minor papilla of the duodenum
in the cow, the pancreas only drains to the accessory pancreatic duct which drains to the minor papilla
describe gallbladder (3) and liver (4) drainage in dogs and cows
gallbladder drains to the cystic duct which drains to the bile duct
the liver drains to the left and right hepatic ducts which drain to the common hepatic duct which drains to the bile duct
describe gallbladder and liver drainage in the horse
horses don’t have a gallbladder
liver drains to left and right hepatic ducts which drain to common bile duct which drains to bile duct
