Listening Strategies Flashcards
What are listening strategies
The ways learners approach a listening task -LS
They can be taught of effective ways to approach a task
Buck(2001) identifies 2 types if listening strategies

- meta cognitive strategies
Cognitive strategies
Comprehension processes - processing linguistic and non linguistic input
Storing and memory processes- storing linguistic and non linguistic input in short term and long term memory
Using and retrieval processes- accessing memory
Metacognitive strategies
Conscious and unconscious mental processes that take place while engaging in a task
Assessing the situation- assessing one’s knowledge, internal and external recourses and constraints of the situation before doing the task
Monitoring- determining the effectiveness of one own performance and others while doing the task
Self evaluating - determining the effective ness if one’s own and other’s performance after the task
Self testing - testing one’s self to determine the effectiveness of one’s language use
Goh (1997,1998)

Monitoring - checking the progress in the course of learning or while completing a task
Evaluating - determining the success of the outcome of an attempt to learn or completing a task
