Lipids Part 3 Flashcards
1
Q
What is fat catabolism?
A
Breakdown of triglyceride to produce energy
2
Q
List the 7 steps of fat catabolism
A
- Mobilization
- Circulation
- Uptake
- Activation
- Translocation
- B-oxidation
- Mitochondrial Oxidation
3
Q
What occur in the step: Mobilization of Fat Catabolism?
A
- Stored lipids in the form of adipose tissue is “opened up” by the hormone sensitive enzymes: lipase. “Opening up” is the hydrolyses of TG into glycerol backbone and 3FA. FAA and MG are released into the blood
4
Q
What occur in the step: Circulation of Fat Catabolism?
A
- FFA must bind to albumin to travel in the circulation
5
Q
What occur in the step: Uptake of Fat Catabolism?
A
-As FFA+albumin travel around body, the target cell (any cell that needs energy) will uptake that FFA to convert it to energy. FFA starts to enter the cell
6
Q
What occur in the step: Activation of Fat Catabolism?
A
- As FFA enter the cell, Coenzyme A will activate FFA by attaching to it making a compound called FattyAcylCoA
- Activation step requires energy ATP->ADP (-1)
7
Q
What occur in the step: Translocation of Fat Catabolism?
A
- The movement of Fatty Acyl CoA from cytosol to mitochondria
- Carnitine
- Requires ATP->ADP (-1)
- Total lost thus far is -2ATP
- carnitine takes FAinto mitochondria
Carnitine translocase needed
Reactivating by CoA
