Q

Are lipids non-polar and why ?

A

Yes, they are non-polar due to the ends are not charged .Water being polar , therefore lipids are not soluble in water ,That means tat the water and lipids molecules do not bond or share electrons in any way .And float in water without blending into it.

Q

How are Triacylgecoris formed ?

A

They are formed when the hydroxyl group on the glycerol bac k bone reacts with the carbonyl group .

Q

With waxes how are they formed ?

A

the fatty acids can react with hydroxyl groups to form esters therefore from three esters due to being three hydroxyl groups .

16
Q

Saturated fatty acids

A

They melt at higher temperatures and are single
They can pack easily together so its harder to melt
Butter is an example at room temperatures and is harder to melt

17
Q

Unsaturated fatty acids

A

Melt at lower temperatures because the double bonds restrict rotations and therefore kink interfering with crystal packing .

Olive oil is an example at room temperature and doesn’t easily pack causing it to melt

18
Q

What can TAGS BE USED FOR ?

A

Energy storage .Which are metabolised in our bodies releasing twice as much energy as carbohydrates .

19
Q

What is the structure of Lipids composed of ?

A

Carbon/Hydrogen /phosphate

20
Q

How is Arthelosis caused ?

A

Saturated fats building up in the Plaque , in which the kik were cis double binds are coated prevnt the moclules from packing together closely enough.

21
Q

Hydrogenating vegetable oils

A

Produce saturated fats /unsaturated fats

Adding h20it can turn as trans resulting in trans fat

22
Q

What group is Carbohydrates part of ?

A

Oxygen
