Lipids 1 Flashcards
Consist of fixed oils, fats and waxes and has esters of long fatty acid chains
Lipids
What is the primary function of lipids?
Energy storage
Fatty or fixed oils that melt in room temperature except?
Cocoa Butter
Fat-semi solid that melts at ordinary temperature except?
Cod liver oil
Classification of lipids that are produced in the intestine, conduct fats to the liver and skeletal muscle, and biodilactils
Chylomicrons
Classification of lipids that carry fat around the entire body within the plant stream
Low density lipoproteins
What are high density proteins?
fat from cells and tissues that return to the liver
What are very low density lipoproteins?
Intermediate lipoproteins, transitional form between chylomicrons and low density lipoproteins
Composition of triglycerides
Glycerol + 3 Fatty Acids
These 2 are only applicable to unsaturated fatty acids
Cis and Trans
Definition of trans
Attached to a carbon with a double bond at the opposite direction
Definition of Cis
Attached to a carbon with a double bond at the same direction
Systematic names, and common sources of Oleic and Elaidic
Oleic = Cis 9-octadecenoic, plants and animal fat
Elaidic = Trans 9 Octadecenoic, animal fats
