Limbic System Flashcards
limbic system is involved in activities necessary for survival such as
1) distinguishing agreeable and disagreeable
2) allowing one to experience emotion
3) defining personal identity
4) learning and memory
limbic system
interface between somatic and visceral areas of the brain
- the structures around the base of the brain involved in memory and emotions
components of the limbic system
- hypothalamus
- thalamus
- limbic cortex(cingulate gyrus, parahippocampal gyrus, uncus)
- hippocampus
- amygdala
- basal forebrain(setpal area, preoptic area, nucleus accumbens, nucleus basalis of Meynert)
additional components of the limbic system
olfactory bulbs
- olfactory tracts
- olfactory cortex
amygdala
processes of emotion
- fear inhibits amygdala which inhibits learning
functions of the limbic system
- olfaction
- modulates autonomic activity
- emotions
- sexual activity
- aggression
- learning and memory
emotions
any strong subjective feeling that is associated with bodily changes(autonomic) that leads to an impulse for action
agnosia
unable to recognize visually
stimulation of the amygdala
produces fear and anxiety
- adds emotional content to memories
learning and memory
acquisition of new information and/or knowledge
- retention of learned material
bilateral hippocampal injuries
1) lack recent memory
2) have more disturbed emotionally charged memories than emotionally neutral memories
3) have more memory impairment when emotionally upset
three types of memory
1) emotional(amygdala)
2) procedural(frontal cortex, BG, thalamus)= motor memory
3) declarative(cortex and hippocampus)=factual memory
stages of recall
1) immediate recall
2) short term recall
3) long term
- requires gene transcription, protein synthesis, synaptic connections being made
4) engram(memory trace)= physical representation or location of a memory
memory acquisition
- procedural: practice and repetitions increases neuronal connections
- declarative: hippocampus and its connections acquire and consolidate information
- memory consolidation occurs during REM sleep
