LIMBIC SYSTEM Flashcards
What is the role of the limbic system
to regulate emotion, motivation, learning and memory
What are the major components of the limbic system
limbic lobe
hippocampus
amygdala
Is the limbic lobe a true lobe? explain
no, it comprises a ring of cortex on the medial surface of the brain spanning aspects of the frontal, parietal, and temporal lobes
Describe the location of the hippocampus
- floor of the inferior horn of the lateral ventricle
Describe the location of the amygdala
just rostral/anterior and medial to the hippocampus
What is the function(s) of the hippocampus
- Learning
- Memory formation & retrieval
- Site of adult neurogenesis
What is the function(s) of the amygdala
- Emotional learning & memory
- Fear
- Reward
What are the two types of long-term memory
- Declarative (explicit)
- Nondeclarative (implicit)
What are the two types of declarative memory
- Episodic
- Semantic
In the papez circuit - What occurs to output from the hippocampus
carried to the mamillary bodies via the fornix
In the papez circuit - What occurs to information leaving the mammillary bodies
Travels via the mammillothalamic tract to the anterior nucleus of the thalamus
In the papez circuit - what occurs to information after the anterior nucleus
terminates in the cingulare gyrus on the medial surface of the cortex
In the papez circuit - what occurs to output from the cingulate gyrus
can travel via the cingulum, back to the hippocampus, and at the same time can project to widespread areas of the cortex
What is the function of the papez circuit
Neuroanatomical substrate of emotion & memory by connecting areas of cortex with the rest of the limbic system - allows for top-down cortical control of emotional responses
