The media
• The media often shows young people drinking alcohol, dressed inappropriately, dancing and having a great time.
• This is not an accurate portrayal of real life.
• They don’t show anyone getting sick from alcohol poisoning or getting
unwanted attention.
How can Peer pressure influence your life choices?
- Pressure from peers often makes us do things we do not feel comfortable with.
- If you know what your values are and what is right and wrong, it will be easier for you to deal with this pressure.
How can your culture influence your life choices?
- When you grow up in a distinctive culture, its likely to influence your lifestyle, your belief system and even your diet.
- Some food traditions are healthier than others, so you might want to modify some family favourite to fit them into a healthy lifestyle.

- Financial problems may lead to lower educational levels.
- Children born to teenage parents often face greater challenges, such as emotional issues, which can lead to behaviour problems.

• Democracy – in a democracy we all have certain rights.

• Non-racism and Non-sexism – Treating someone differently because of their race or
gender must be stopped
• An open society – This value involves the right to freedom of expression.
• Accountability – to be responsible to others and be responsible for your own actions.
• The rule of law – We must all respect and obey the laws, rules and regulations.
• Respect – People must be able to respect each other despite their differences.
• Reconciliation – These value entails healing and reconciling past events.
• Ubuntu – we must treat each other with respect and dignity
Employees and employers’ rights:
• Every citizen has the right to choose their trade, occupation or profession freely
• Every worker has the right to fair labour practices
• Every worker has the right to form or join a trade union and to strike.
• Every employer has the right to form a join an employers’ organization.
• Every trade union, employers’ organization and employer has the right to engage in
collective bargaining
Employees and employers’ environmental rights:
- Everyone has the right to an environment that is not harmful to their health or wellbeing.
- Everyone has the right to have the environment protected.
- There are relation acts that protect the worker and the employers.
Basic employee’s’ rights include:
• Safe and healthy working environment
• To be given a written contract that states all conditions of employment such as basic
salary, date of payment, sick leave, annual leave. Maternity leave, period of notice, etc.
• A job description that states what your job entails and what is expected of the
employee.
• Employees should be given a payslip – this states the amount paid and deductions
• Payment should be made to the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF). This s a small
amount that is deducted every month from the employee’s salary so if the employee
finds him/herself without work for any reason then they are able to receive payment
from the fund.
