Q

alternation of generations

A

Alternation of generations means that plants alternate between two different life stages, or generations, in their life cycle; a haploid stage called gametophyte and a diploid stage called sporophyte

Q

describe life cycle in plants

A
  1. Begin as a diploid adult (2n).. this is called the sporophyte.
  2. Undergo meiosis to produce two 1n haploid spores, then mitosis to grow and produce two Haploid adults, this is called the gametophyte.
  3. Undergo mitosis/gametogenesis to produce two haploid gametes.
  4. Finally, undergo fertilization to produce the diploid adult 2n

Q

Describe life cycle in animals

A
  1. start with 2n diploid , undergo meiosis/gametogenesis to produce two 1n haploid gametes.
  2. undergo fertilization to produce diploid adult once agaion.

Q

What type of plant is created through polyploidy?

A

Polyploidy:
- failure of cell division after chromosome duplication gives rise to tetraploid tissue…. produces 2n diploid gametes when they should be haploid. … offspring will be tetraploidy.
ex: seedless watermelon
