What is gender identity?
One’s internal sense of being male, female, neither, both or another gender
What is gender expression?
Physical manifestation of one’s gender identity through clothing, hairstyle, voice, body shape, etc
What is sexual orientation?
Who someone loves and wants to be with (romantic and sexual attraction)
What is sexual behavior?
Who someone has sex with
What does intersex mean?
Biological designation for somone who doesnt fit medical definitons of male or female
What does gender fluid mean?
Gender identity is not fixed; may feel like one gender some days and the other on different days
What is gender-queer?
Describes gender identity that is neither male or female; reclaimed term
What is androgynous?
A gender expression that is neither exclusively masculine or exclusively female, or that is ambigious
Sexual orientation does not equal what?
Sexual behavior
What approach should be taken when asking about sexual history?
Use 5 P’s approach (partners, practices, past history of STIs, pregnany plans, protection)
What screening should be routinely done for members of the LGBTQ community?
Screen for depression, anxiety and initmate partner violence; screen for suicidality; screen what you have (offer pap test in transmasculine individuals based on organs present and screening guidelines for people with a cervix)
