What is pathology of Osteoarthritis?
- Eburnation-sclerosis of the subchondral plate
- Fibrillation of articular cartilage forms vertical clefts
- bone cysts and osteophytes form
What is the spine involvement in osteoarthritis?
Usually affects cervical or lumbar area, DJD involves primarily the inter-vetebral joint.
What and where are Herberden’s Nodules?
Nodular deformities of the DIP joints
What and where are Bouchard’s Nodules?
Nodular deformities of the PIP joints
How are the Feet involved in OA?
(1st MCP, bunions) Shows deformities of the toes, the most common is joint disease involving the 1st metatarsophalangeal joint which leads to the formation of bunions.
What are the main characteristics of Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Chronic AI usually symmetric in MCP, PIP, wrist
What is the pathology of Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Synovitis–>inflammatory cell recruitment–>Pannus
What is Pannus?
The exuberant synovial fronds transform into granulation tissue.
What is ankylosis?
Collagenous scar due to joint immobilization
What are the characteristics/symptoms of RA?
Insidious onset, sterile inflammation, systemic disease, low grade fever, loss of appetite malaise
What are the characteristics of wrist RA?
Ulnar deviation, Z deformity, swan neck, hourglass deformities.
What are rheumatoid nodules?
Subcutaneous noodles that are seen in many anatomic sites besides the joints, composed of central fibrinoid necrosis surrounded by macrophages and lymphocytes.
