LFT interpretations Flashcards
high conjugated bilirubin meaning
biliary obstruction
what does equal ratio of conjugated and unconjugated bilirubin meaning
hepatocellular damage
what causes hepatocellular jaundice
damage to hepatocytes due to
- infection
- drugs
- alcohol
what is intrahepatic cholestasis
failure of bile flow or excretion within the liver
what is extrahepatic jaundice
obstruction of biliary jaundice
eg malignancy or gallstones
what is haemolytic jaundice
break down of red blood cells at a rate faster than liver can excrete
that causes haemolytic jaundice
- drugs
- infection
- enzyme deficiency
marker of haemolytic jaundice
bilirubin up to 80mmol
marker of hepatocellular jaundice
bilirubin up to 300mmol
marker of cholestasis
bilirubin up to 500mmol
what does high ALT mean
- acute liver damage (+++)
- chronic liver disease (++)
- obstructive jaundice (+)
what does low ALT and AST mean
B6 deficiency
what does high AST mean
- shock
- liver disease
- pregnancy
- exercise
when is GGT raised
- liver/biliary disease
- pancreatic cancer
- used in those at risk of liver disease due to alcoholism
does GGT increase during alcohol consumption
yes and falls once consumption is over
what happens if GGT levels stay high
liver damage has been sustained or patient still drinking
what does high ALP mean
- liver/biliary disease
- most highly raised in obstructive jaundice
- cirrhosis
- liver cancer
- bone disease
what does low albumin mean
- malnutrition
- chronic renal failure
- nephrotic syndrome
- severe burns
- post surgery
- pregnancy/age
