Lewis Antibodies Flashcards
What gene is the secretor gene?
FUT2
Regulates formation of the H-antigen, which then by FUT3 creates the Lewis B antigen
What gene is the Lewis gene?
FUT3
H-antigen precursor, with FUT3, creates Lewis A antigen
If a person has the following Lewis and secretor genotypes:
Le
sese
What Lewis phenotype are they?
Le –> have lewis gene
sese –> does not have secretor gene
Phenotype: Le (a+ b-)
If a person has the following Lewis and secretor genotypes:
Le
Se
What Lewis phenotype are they?
Le –> have lewis gene
Se –> have secretor gene
Phenotype: Le (a- b+)
If a person has the following Lewis and secretor genotypes:
lele
Se
What Lewis phenotype are they?
lele –> does NOT have lewis gene
Se –> has secretor gene
Phenotype: Le (a- b-)
** lele or NO lewis gene will always express Le (a- b-)
Which Lewis antigen is most prevalent in whites and blacks?
Le(b)
Which antibodies are capable of reacting in every phase of testing? (IS, AHT)
Lewis
Which antibodies can bind complement?
I, Kidd, Lewis
Which antibodies can be enhanced by enzymatic treatment?
Rh, Lewis, Kidd, P1, I
The KIDD and MONKEY (Rh) use LIP (Lewis, I, P1) enhancers 👄
Are Lewis antibodies found on cord cells?
No
Lewis antigens are not on fetal cells and the antibodies are usually IgM.
Cord cells and fetal cells will phenotype as Le(a- b-)
What kind of antibody is Lewis antibody? IgG or IgM?
IgM
Can be hemolytic
Can Lewis antibodies be hemolytic?
Yes. But they are generally not clinically significant.
What Lewis phenotype can pregnant women become temporarily?
Le (a- b-)
Can the ABO group affect Lewis antigen expression?
Yes
ABO grouping does affect antigen expression since the addition of an immunodominant sugar to 1H chain can result in the formation of ALeb and BLeb (in individuals who carry at least one Se gene and Le gene).
Which Lewis blood group system phenotypes usually produces anti-Le(a)?
Le (a- b-)
Anti-Le(a) is an antibody found only in the serum of Le (a-b-) individuals, IgM, not clinically significant.
