Levers Flashcards
What is a lever
a solid bar that turns around an axis to create movement
what are the three different components of a lever
-fulcrum
-resistance
-effort
describe fulcrum
-fixed point which a lever can turn at
-can be a joint or a point of contact with the floor or an external object
describe resistance
-the load or weight that a lever must work against
describe effort
-the force required to move the resistance
-applied by the muscles as they contract
what does FRE represent
F- center of 1st class lever
R- center of 2nd class lever
E- center of 3rd class lever
describe a first class lever
-ex. nodding your head
-trapezius muscle provides the effort
-the weight of head provides resistance
-the joint between the spine and cranium is the fulcrum
describe a 2nd class lever
Ex. plantar flexion
-fulcrum is the joints between the toes
-resistance is the body weight
-effort is provided by the gastrocnemius
describe a 3rd class lever
ex. bicep curl
-fulcrum is elbow joint
-effort is provided by bicep muscle
-resistance is the weigh or the dumbbell
