Lesson 9- Explaining Depression: Cognitive π§ approach- Beck ( π§ triad) & ABC model & Mustabatory Thinking π- Ellis Flashcards
What are the 2 explanations of depression & who came up with them & when did they do so?
1) Cognitive π§ Triad- Beck (1960)
2) ABC Model- Ellis (1962)
What principle is Beckβs Cognitive π§ Triad based on?
π π/schemas -> Depression & these schemas develop in πΆ hood
What are 2 examples of π schemas?
1) Self blame- responsible for all misfortunes
2) Ineptness- expect failure at everything
What are the 3 stages of the π§ triad?
Stage 1: π π about self- criticise themselves- worthless- βI am uselessβ
Stage 2: π π about world- global negativity- π larger scale
Stage 3: π π about future π°- βI will always be uselessβ
What are the evaluation points of Beckβs π§ triad?
π- cause & effect not clear- π π come first or depression-> π π
π- Research support- Terry (2000)- 65π€° women- π§ vulnerability. Women- β¬οΈ π§ vulnerability (to ππ)- β¬οΈ likely suffer post natal depression
π- βοΈ explain how some depression symptoms develop- π‘, hallucinations, bizarre beliefs
π- CB ( π§ πβββ) approach looks at both approaches to find causes of depression instead of using them to contradict each other
β π§ - π π
β πβββ- classical conditioning, operant conditioning & social learning
What principle is Ellisβ ABC model based on?
Mustabatory π:
β βI must excel in all areasβ¦otherwise I am worthlessβ
β Causes irrational & π π- emotionally damaging-> depression
β Disappointment bound to occur- expectations too β¬οΈ
Depression caused by irrational & π beliefs- model shows formation
What is the ABC model (3 stages)?
1) Activating Event: π π triggered by event in environment e.g. exam failure- causes π mood & outlook
2) Beliefs: π & beliefs associated with activating event- e.g. stupid, useless
Beliefs rational (leads to appropriate consequences- 3) or irrational (leads to inappropriate consequences- 3)
3) Consequences: π & beliefs-> π emotions (upset-> drop out of π« )
What are the evaluation points of Ellisβ ABC model?
π- cause & effect not clear- π π come first or depression-> π π
π- research support- Bates (1999)- depressed pps given π πstatements-> pps- even more depressed- helps psychologists find useful treatments- depression- if cause of it (π π) known
π- biological 𧬠approach- criticise- π§ approach- suggest genes, neurotransmitters (β¬οΈ serotonin) β causes depression. Zhang (2005)- found gene- depression 10 times β¬οΈ likely
π- ABC Model- based- scientific π§ͺ evidence- objective testing- β¬οΈ understanding
