How can a persons failure to function adequately be measured?
Using the 7 criteria
What are the 7 criteria?
1) Suffering- psychological π§ or physical- π§ abnormality- π effect on person
2) Unpredictability & loss of control- very variable πβββ- uncontrolled, inappropriate- sudden changes in mood
3) Maladaptiveness- abnormal/π πβββ- βοΈ good relationships & working effectively
4) Observer discomfort π- when ppl see βrulesβ- social πβββ- being broken
5) Vividness & unconventionality- πβββ in situations differs from normal people
6) Irrationality & incomprehensibility- unclear reasoning- why they πβββ in such way- βοΈ reason behind it
7) Violation of moral & ideal standards- πβββ judged abnormal- moral standards violated
How can you remember the 7 criteria?
SUMOVIV
Why are the 7 criteria important?
1) Help define mental abnormality
The β¬οΈ criteria, β¬οΈ abnormal
The β¬οΈ criteria, β¬οΈ normal
What are the evaluation points of failure to function adequately?
π- possibly inaccurate- abnormality βοΈ always accompanied- dysfunction- some have psychological abnormality BUT live normal life- e.g. Harold Shipman ( GP π¨ββοΈ who killed πͺ his patients- had wife π© and children πΆ and supposedly lived normal life- educated as well- wouldnβt expect)- some βοΈ function adequately BUT normal (e.g. bad day)
π- GAF scale use- assess degree- abnormality (coping with daily life?)- β¦ used to diagnose abnormality if βοΈ functioning adequately
π- 7 criteria- difficult to measure & analyse- subjective & βοΈ scientific π§ͺ/objective- psychologists- cautious- using model- some criteria- ignored- normal to display- certain scenarios
π- easy- assess consequences- dysfunctional πβββ- measure level- functioning- e.g. absences- school π«/work
