Lesson 13: Biological π± approach to treating OCD (Drug π Therapy) Flashcards
What 2 drugs are used to treat OCD as part of the Biological π± approach to OCD?
1) SSRI drugs (anti-depressants)- e.g. Prozac
2) Benzodiazepines (BZ)- e.g. Valium
What are SSRI drugs (anti-depressants) and how do they help treat OCD?
1) SSRI (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors)- prevent reuptake- serotonin- prolong activity- in synapse-> β¬οΈ serotonin available, β¬οΈ anxiety, better mood π & emotions (π)- e.g. Prozac
2) β¬οΈ serotonin via SSRI β¬οΈ βworry circuitβ (damages caudate nucleus- βοΈ suppress minor worry signals β¦ message sent to orbital frontal cortex-> β¬οΈ worrying, anxiety
3) Prescribed- 12-16 weeks
What are the evaluation points of the use of SSRI drugs (anti-depressants) to treat OCD?
π- side effects- indigestion, blurred vision π, lose sex drive-> βοΈ taking medication π
π- cheap- cost effective for NHS- compared- psychological therapies (CBT), counselling etc- economical too
π- Koran (2007)- criticised use of π- CBT should be tried first- π therapy- little effort, short term, βοΈ long lasting cure (plaster)- relapse (deteriorate) occurs if medication stopped (within weeks)
π- research support- Soomro (2009)- 17 studies- compared SSRIβs to placebo drugs- all 17 studies- showed SSRI drugs β¬οΈ effective
What are Benzodiazepines (BZ) and how do they help treat OCD?
1) BZ β¬οΈ anxiety- e.g. Valium- β¬οΈ activity in CNS- β¬οΈ blood π pressure- β¬οΈβ€οΈ rate
2) BZ β¬οΈ GABA (neurotransmitter- slows down firing of neurons-> person β¬οΈ anxious, calmer)
3) BZ drugs- bind to GABA receptor site- of post synaptic neuron-> β¬οΈ flow chloride ions into post synaptic neuron- chloride ions- make it β¬οΈ difficult for neuron to be stimulated by other neurotransmitters β¦ slow activity- person relaxed
4) BZ β¬οΈ serotonin-> β¬οΈ arousal, anxiety BUT β¬οΈ π β¦-> depression
What are the evaluation points of the use of Benzodiazepines (BZ) to treat OCD?
π- long term side effects- drowsiness, depression (β¬οΈ serotonin), β¬οΈ accident rate β¦ BZ βοΈ used as long term treatment
π- quick fix- faster than psychological treatments (CBT)- immediate relief (β¬οΈ anxiety)
π- Ashton (1997)- users- dependent on BZ- sudden withdrawal-> β¬οΈ anxiety (OCD symptoms)
β Drug escalation- tolerance?- patients- take large doses- β¬οΈ symptoms
π- good short term fix- βοΈ real serious side effects in short term- β¦ good short term drug to β¬οΈ symptoms
