Q

What is Systematic Desensitisation?

A

Systematic Desensitisation- behavioural ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚โ€ therapy- reduce/diminish phobia- through ๐Ÿ‘ classical conditioning (counter conditioning). Replace anxiety ๐Ÿ˜ฆ and fear ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ with calm, relaxed ๐Ÿ˜Œ responses- reciprocal inhibition (inability to experience ๐Ÿ˜Š ๐Ÿ˜” emotions at the same time- โœ–๏ธ coexist โ€ฆ one replaces the other)

Q

What is the process of Systematic Desensitisation?

A

1) Hierarchy of Fear- situations ranked ๐Ÿ“ถ- constructed by therapist and patient together
2) Relaxation Techniques- PMR (progressive muscular ๐Ÿ’ช relaxation)- sit quietly, comfortably, close ๐Ÿ‘€- hold ๐Ÿ’ช - extreme tension- relax- ๐Ÿฆถ โฌ†๏ธ- breathe deeply, meditate, imagine ๐Ÿ˜Œ situations
3) Gradual exposure- ๐Ÿ†™ Hierarchy of Fear- relaxation technique- each stage- when comfortable- move on- repeated exposure- phobia eliminated- many therapy sessions

Q

What are the evaluation points of Systematic Desensitisation?

A

๐Ÿ‘Ž- not always practical ๐Ÿงช - difficult to arrange/control- e.g. phobia of ๐Ÿฆˆ- questions effectiveness
๐Ÿ‘- less traumatic therapy (flooding)- less psychological ๐Ÿง  harm, less upsetting ๐Ÿ˜ข, more ethical
๐Ÿ‘Ž- only symptoms addressed- underlying causes remain- symptoms may return or Symptom Substitution (abnormal behaviours replaces)
๐Ÿ‘- Klosko et al. (1990)- 87% panic free after SD- 50% medication- 36% placebo- effective therapy compared to others

Q

What is Flooding?

A

Flooding- direct/immediate exposure to phobic object- extreme situation- no gradual build upโœ–๏ธ๐Ÿ“ถ- done โ€˜in vivoโ€™ (real life) or virtually (not as good)

Q

What is the process of Flooding?

A

1) Fully informed (written ๐Ÿ“) consent required
2) Patient put in extreme situation with phobic object
3) Phobic responses- stopped โœ‹ quicklyโšก๏ธ- avoidance not possible- forced to face
4) Extinction occurs- patient learns phobic object harmless
5) Relaxation ๐Ÿ˜Œ achieved- exhausted ๐Ÿ’ค by own fear ๐Ÿ˜ง response

Q

What are the evaluation points of Flooding?

A

๐Ÿ‘Ž- highly traumatic experience- possible โฐ & ๐Ÿ’ด wasted- patient unwilling- complete treatment
๐Ÿ‘- quick therapy- โ€ฆ cost ๐Ÿ’ต effective & patients free of symptoms A.S.A.P
๐Ÿ‘Ž- less effective for social phobias (e.g. public speaking)- cognitive ๐Ÿง  therapy better
๐Ÿ‘- Ost (1997)- stated flooding effective and rapidโšก๏ธ- immediateโšก๏ธimprovement ๐Ÿ†™- exposure outside therapy sessions (applied to daily life)
