What is the base component of fats
Triglycerides form the base components of fats, they are made up of a singular glycerol molecule alongside 3 fatty acids.
What are saturated fats
All carbon atoms are associated with hydrogen, solid at room temperature & found in meat and dairy dairy
What are unsaturated fats
1 or more carbon atoms is without the attachment of hydrogen, liquid at room temperature & found in olive oil and vegetable oils
What effects can trans-unsaturated fats have
Dramatic increase in cholesterol, found in fast food, Margarine & baked food
What are the functions of fat
- concentrated energy source
- protects and cushions organs
- acts as insulation and helps maintain body temperature
- structural materials for cells
Why are fats over consumed
Because they add flavour and texture to foods
Why do athletes cut back on fat intake
To allow them to consume greater amounts of carbohydrates
What is the RDA of fat for both men and women
90g for males
70g for females
