Lesson 2 - Metabolism Flashcards
What is meant by ‘metabolism’
Referred to the chemical processes that occur in the body to maintain life, refers to the breakdown of food and its transformation into energy
What two stages make up metabolism
Anabolism (build up of substances) and catabolism (breakdown of substances)
What does BMR stand for
Basal Metabolic Rate
What is the calculation to work out your BMR
For both male and female
BMR for Men = 66.5 + (13.75 x weight [kg]) + (5.0 x height[cm]) − (6.76 x age [years])
BMR for Women = 65.5 + (9.5 x weight [kg]) + (1.85 x height [cm]) − (4.7 x age [years])
What are the multipliers for each activity level
Sedentary - BMR x 1.2 Little exercise - BMR x 1.375 Moderate - BMR x 1.55 Heavy - BMR x 1.725 Very heavy - BMR x 1.9
What are the 4 contributors to energy expenditure
Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)
Dietary thermogenesis (DT)
Physical activity (PA)
Adaptive thermogenesis (AT)
What is a bio-electrical impedance analysis (BIA)
Standard technique used to measure body fat percentage, in which electrodes are fitted across the body transmitting a low frequency current which determines what resistance is given by both muscle and fat
