Lesson 3 - Carbohydrates Flashcards
What are macronutrients
A group of the 3 largest groups of nutrients that are required by the body to function properly, contains proteins, carbohydrates and fats.
How many calories do 1g of carbs, fats and protein have
1g of carbohydrates = 4 kcals
1g of fats = 9 kcals
1g of proteins = 4 kcals
What are simple carbohydrates
Essentially sugars, formed through single sugar units called monosaccharides or double sugar units called disaccharides, they are easily absorbed providing a quick source of energy
What are complex carbohydrates
Longer chains of sugar called polysaccharides. They allow larger quantities of glucose to be stored and also provide a slower realise of energy
What does GI stand for
The Glycaemic index, determined by its composition in terms of macro and micronutrients and how it’s cooked
What is meant by a high GI food
Can be broken down quickly and causes rapid increases in blood glucose levels
What is meant by a low GI food
Broken down slowly and has a gradual increase of blood glucose levels, also helps control appetite and makes you feel full for longer
