5 Critical Qs

2) how serious is the potential harm?
3) how many people will be harmed?
4) what is the prob. it will happen?
5) what can/should I do?
QALY =
Quality Adjusted Life Years
Utility
tx decisions and health care cost allocations can be made based on QALYs assoc. with different conditions and outcomes
5 step mental model approach
1) create an expert model
2) conduct mental models interviews
3) conduct structured initial interviews
4) draft risk comm.
5) evaluate comm.
What makes message development difficult?
1) low numeracy skills
2) defensive bias
3) ambiguity avoidance
4) gist thinking (increases with age)
Fuzzy Trace Theory
people think about risk in different ways, anchored at one extreme by qualitative thinking based on simple gist representations such as “avoid risk” and at the other extreme by quantitative thinking involving trading off risks and benefits
