- denial
- evasion of responsibility
- corrective action
- mortification
3 types of strategies included in denial
1) denial
2) attack
3) intimidation
types of evasion of responsibility
1) defeasibility (it’s not feasible that we should be blamed!)
2) displacement (someone else is resp.)
3) minimization (it’s not that bad)
4) transcendence (put it in perspective)
5) bolstering (look at all the unrelated good we’ve done)
6) differentiation (what’s occurred is different than offenses of other orgs.)
types of corrective action
1) compensation
2) corrective actions
types of mortification
1) mortification (humbly describe embarrassment)
2) suffering (we are suffering just like you!)
3) penitential apology (apology w/o reason why) (vs. causal apology, which gives a reason)
Ethical perspectives
- human nature (values chars. that make human beings distinctive)
- dialogical (behavior is ethical when it promotes active interaction and allows people to achieve their potential
- utilitarian (assesses rightness/wrongness)
- feminist
- legal (ethics = legality)
- situational (look at context of action to determine if it’s right or wrong)
2 types of rationality
instrumental (reasoning driven by business objectives of the org.) and value (driven by beliefs and ethics)
lie
deliberate attempt to mislead w/o the prior consent of the target
normalization of deviance
:)

purposefully being vague
significant choice
consumers who consume messages have to be able to make an intelligent decision based on the info they receive
Hasty generalization
conclusions drawn on the basis of a number of incidents that don’t sufficiently support the conclusion
post hoc ergo propter hoc
after the fact, therefore because of the fact
red herring
unrelated argument to distract from key issue
ad hominem
arg. based on attacking the chars. of the group or person supporting it
