What are the 3 divisions of the small intestine?
Duodenum, jejunum, ileum
Where is the beginning of the duodenum?
At the pyloric sphincter, which is at the border with the stomach
What are the 2 papillae of the duodenum?
Minor duodenal papilla, Major duodenal papilla
What is the function of the duodenal papillae?
They allow pancreatic and gall bladder secretions to enter the duodenum via the hepatopancreatic ampulla
What is the longest part of the small intestine?
Ileum
What structure connects the small intestine and large intestine?
Ileocecal valve
What is the difference between the dimensions of the jejunum and ileum?
Jejunum has a larger diameter and is thicker walled that the ileum, but is shorter in length
What are the parts of the large intestine?
Cecum, ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon, rectum
What is the name for the pouches in the wall of the large intestine?
haustra
What parts of the colon are retroperitoneal?
Ascending colon, Descending colon
What are haustra?
Pouches in the large intestine formed by circular muscle that is specialised into semi-lunar folds
What structures in the rectum aid in the storage of faeces in the rectum?
Rectal folds
What are the 2 structures that regulate defecation?
External and internal anal sphincters
What type of epithelium lines the rectum and anus?
Stratified squamous
