lecture 13 - GI histology 3 Flashcards
What are the 2 major vessels that the liver receives blood from?
Hepatic artery (25% of blood), Portal vein (75% of blood)
Which vein drains the liver?
Hepatic vein
Where does the hepatic vein drain?
The inferior vena cava
What are the structural units of the liver?
Lobules
What is found at the centre of each lobule of the liver?
A central vein
What is found at each point of the hexagon of a liver lobule?
Portal triad (portal vein, hepatic artery, bile duct)
What are the components of a portal triad?
A branch of the hepatic artery and portal vein, a bile duct
What joins the blood vessels of the portal triad with the central vein?
Hepatic sinusoids
What channels drain bile from the hepatocytes to the bile ducts?
Bile canaliculi
What fibres maintain the structural integrity of the liver?
Reticular fibres
What is the functional subunit of the liver?
Hepatic acinus
What are the 3 zones of the hepatic acinus?
Zone 1 (periportal), Zone 2 (intermediate), Zone 3 (pericentral)
Which zone of the hepatic acinus has the highest level of oxygenation and metabolic activity?
Zone 1 (closest to the triads)
What is the function of Kupfer cells in the liver?
Act like macrophages to mop up debris
What is the function of stellate cells in the liver?
Produced reticular fibres
