What is the oral cavity proper?
The space enclosed by the alveolar arches and teeth
What is the oral vestibule?
The area between the teeth and the gingiva and the walls of the mouth (everywhere outside the oral cavity proper)
What structure separates the nasal and oral cavities?
Hard palate
Where does the parotid duct open into?
Beside the upper 2nd molar in the vestibule
Which ducts open into the oral cavity proper?
Submandibular duct, sublingual duct
What is the anatomical name for the gums?
Gingiva
What is the name for the mucosa that covers the cheek side of the vestibule?
Buccal mucosa
What is the name for the gums under the tongue in the oral cavity proper?
Lingual gingiva
What is the name for the septum-like structure that connects the tongue to the base of the oral cavity proper?
Frenulum

What is the function of the uvula?
Prevents food from going from up into the nose
What are the 5 muscles of soft palate?
Tensor palati, Levator palati, palatopharyngeus, palatoglossus, musculus uvulae
What are the 2 arches at the entrance to the orophraynx?
palatoglossal arch, palatopharyngeal arch
What are the 2 parts of the tongue
Oral (anterior) and pharyngeal (posterior)
What structures form a V-shape on the tongue at the back of the oral part?
Vallate papillae
What are the extrinsic muscles of the tongue?
Mylohyoid, geniohyooid, hyoglossus, styloglossus
What are the intrinsic muscles of the tongue?
horizontal, vertical, transverse
What are the functions of saliva?
hygiene, pH, amylase for starch breakdown, lubrication
Where is the parotid gland located?
In the jaw, in front of the ear
