Pharyngobasilar fascia
What is the name for the fascia in the wall of the pharynx?
Buccopharyngeal fascia
What are the 2 muscle layers in the pharynx?
Inner levators, outer constrictors
What is the valleculae of the pharynx?
The recess found behind the posterior tongue, anterior to the epiglottis
What is the piriform fossa?
A space that sits laterally and posteriorly to the epiglottis
What is the name for the upper oesophageal sphincter?
The cricopharyngeus sphincter
What is the process of swallowing?
Food is chewed voluntarily, soft palate is elevated and tensed, upper sphincter relaxes, food is swallowed and upper sphincter closes, peristalsis moves food down oesophagus, lower oesophageal sphincter relaxes
