lecture 5 - peritoneum, oesophagus & stomach Flashcards
What are the 9 divions of the abdomen (top right to bottom left)?
Right hypochondrium, epigastrium region, left hypochondrium, right lumbar/flank, periumbilical region, left lumbar/flank, right iliac fossa, hypogastrium/suprpubic region, left iliac fossa
What 2 lines divide the abdomen into 3 parts vertically?
Midclavicular lines
What 2 planes divide the abdomen into 3 parts horizontally?
Subcostal plane, intertubercular plane
What landmarks mark the edges of the interubercular plane?
Anterior Superior Iliac Spines
Where is the transpyloric plane?
Horizontally across the abdomen, passing through the pylorus of the stomach
What are the 2 divisions of the omentum?
Greater, lesser
Where is the greater omentum located?
Hangs like an apron off the greater curvature of the stomach, and hangs down anteriorly to the intestines
Where is the lesser omentum located?
Connecting the liver and stomach
What is omentum?
A structure made up of a fold of visceral peritoneum that connects the stomach to other abdominal organs
What is mesentery?
A fold of the parietal peritoneum that attaches the organs to the posterior wall of the abdomen
What are the 2 layers of the peritoneum?
Visceral (inner), parietal (outer)
How can organs that are not covered by peritoneum be described?
Retroperitoneal
What are the omental sacs?
Spaces formed by the greater and lesser omenta
What is the alternative name for the lesser sac?
The omental bursa
Where is the omental bursa/lesser sac located?
Posterior to the stomach, inferior to the liver, anterior to the pancreas
What structures make up the omental bursa/lesser sac?
The greater omentum and less omentum
What is mesocolon?
Area of peritoneum that connect the colon to the posterior wall.
What are the paracolic gutters?
Areas betwen the colon and the lateral abdominal walls
What are the 2 compartments formed by the mesentery?
Supracolic, Infracolic
What structure marks the border between the supracolic and infracolic compartments?
Transverse mesocolon
What are the 4 key parts of the stomach?
Cardia, Fundus, Body, Plylorus
Where is the cardia of the stomach?
After the point where the oesophagus joins the stomach
Where is the fundus of the stomach?
The upper bulge, superior to the point where the eosophagus joins the stomach
Where is the pyloric antrum?
At the bottom of the stomach, before the pyloric canal
