What is the difference between mucosal and sub-mucosal glands?
Mucosal glands invaginate into the mucosa, while sub-mucosal glands also invaginate into the submucosa
What are the folds in the stomach called?
Rugae
What are the key functional features of the vasculature of the stomach?
Arterial anastomoses, venous plexus
What are the 3 layers of the muscularis externa of the stomach?
Inner oblique, middle circular, outer longitudinal
What are the 2 parts of the invaginations of the gastric mucosa?
Gastric pits (superficial), Gastric glands (deep)
What is the function of chief cells in the stomach?
Secrete enzymes - pepsinogen & lipase
What is the function of parietal cells in the stomach?
Secrete Hydrochloric acid and Intrinsic Factor
What is the function of Intrinsic Factor?
Required for uptake for Vitamin B12 in the small intestine
What is the name for the gross folds that circle the lumen of the small intestine?
Plicae circularis
What structure is found at the core of each villus in the small intestine?
Lacteal - a capillary + lymph vessel unit
