Lecture 8: Wildfire Flashcards
What is a Disturbance?
event killing or damaging organisms leading for opportunities for other organisms to establish and grow
Succession?
process by which species composition changes over time in a community recovering from disturbance
Early Successional vs. Late-successional
early successional species (fast growing, short-lived) replaced by late successional species (slow-growing, long-lived, good competitors)
Severity
amount of organic material removed
Intensity
energy releases per unit area/time (hot? strong wind?)
Frequency
often/rare
Type
fire, glacier, storm, disease
Size/Pattern
small patched or whole landscape
Timing
soon after disturbance or after many years
When is diversity the highest based on frequency
highest at intermediate frequency
How does time relate to diversity after disturbance
diversity increases as time increases, but can decline later due to competion
How does severity affect succession
more severe slows succession
How does intensity affect succession
slower with higher intensity
How does burn frequency correlate to invasion percentage
The more burns the more invasions–> slowing succession to an intact forest
What does a short time interval between fires affect succession
slows bc kills recovering shrubs/trees
Succession should proceed more quickly following disturbances that are ___ in area and occur at ___ intensity.
small, low
Steady State:
when is community is not undergoing directional change in community composition
In which frequency of disturbance are you likely to see the greatest species diversity?
intermediate frequency disturbance
Prescribed fire, with a ___ intensity burn, makes it ___ likely that an area will experience a subsequent severe wildfire.
low, less
How does size correlate to recovery
bigger=longer time to recover due to more dispersal
