Lecture 6: Invasion Flashcards
What is a Native Species
lives within the traditional range
Non-Native Species?
lives outside of native range
introduced species
introduced by human activity to non-native area
invasive species
introduced species that causes environmental or economic harm
Weed
plant growing in an unwanted area (competes with desired species)
What are mechanism of ecological impacts from invasive species
direct predation, competition, toxicity, changing environmental conditions
What are mechanism of ecological impacts from invasive species
direct predation, competition, toxicity, changing environmental conditions
Competitive Exclusion
two species are not able to co-exist using the same resources
If there is more diversity in a area would invasion be more or less likely?
Less bc the resources would be used
Why are oceanic islands and tropics more likely to be invaded?
less diverse
Biotic resistance
ability of species in area to limit likelihood of being invaded
Disturbance?
events causing change in structure or ecosystem function–> often death of organisms and removal of biomass
Why does disturbance promote invasion
bc there are more resources available due to the decline in species divsersity
propagule pressure
composite measure of the number of individuals released into a region to which they are not native
does propagule pressure increase or decrease invasion
increase
What are the traits of invasive species
fast growth, usually higher dispersal, tolerate greater environmental range, more plastic, trait differing from species
Phenotypic Plasticity
individuals with same genotype adjust phenotype with varying enviroment
Enemy release
a invaded species would have predators in native range but coming not non-native they are leaving those to grow faster in population
Invasional Meltdown
positive interactions btw invaders amplifying effects
Invasion changed the environment creating opportunities for new species invasion
new mutualism are created
