lecture 8 - sexual segregation in vertebrates Flashcards
what is social segregation
male, female, sub adults and adults, or large and small individuals live in different social group
what is segregation and why important
most species separate themselves based on type (sex, age, etc), usually to minimize risk, be more efficient in survival, and maximize life
what is habitat segregation
classes of animals differ in habitat use
can they be socially segregated and still live in the same area
yes
what is spatial segregation
difference in how they use land
what is diet segregation
differences in diet choice
what is temporal segregation
using the same area but at different times of the year
how do bighorn sheep segregate and whats the scale
socially
scale: few meters
how do fallow deer segregate and what is the scale of this
socially and habitat
scale: few kms
what is the main driver of sexual segregation in phoenix park
predation
what is the predation risk hypothesis
Females select safer areas even if it means they will get less food (also because they are more vulnerable than men usually and they often have offspring with them)
Males want the best feeding area even if it is riskier bc then they will get better resources. They want to be bigger and better fighters
what is the forage selection/sexual dimorphism-body size hypothesis
allometric differences in body size, bite size, and digestion efficiency lead to males and females having different foraging behaviors/efficiency so they need to go to different foods
what is allometry
when a part of the body is increasing and another part of the body is disproportionately increasing more
what is the power law
y = kx^a
what is the activity budget hypothesis
larger males cannot forage with smaller females due to differences in activity budgets resulting from body size related differences in digestive physiology
groups need to do the same thing to be safe
