lecture 22 - navigation Flashcards
is navigation or orientation preffered when referring to long distance trips
navigation
what is orientation
taking up a particular bearing with respect to current position or landmark
what is navigation
finding way from present position to given destination (current not visible)
how do weakly electric fish navigate
electrolocation (sense thing by disruptions to electric field made)
how do bats navigate
echolocation and sonar topography
what are some ways to orient
- random/systematic search
- genetically based orientation
- trail following
- route based orientation
- pilotage
- true navigation
what are the different route based orientation strats
route reversal (use info gathered during outbound trip)
course reversal (follow landmarks in reverse order, taking the opposite direction)
path integration/dead reckoning (estimating own position on basis of outbound trip)
how do desert ants use path integration
can venture up to 100m away from nest and get back by taking shortest straight-line return path by using sun compass and polarization compass and wind compass. they measure distance in steps
what is true navigating
using endogenous and exogenous stimuli to estimate own position
what are the types of true vagiaton
map-based navigation/location based navigation/pilotage (own position established on mental map useing geographic and topographic clues)
grid-based navigation/bicoordinate nav/comparative sytem (large scale phsyical or chem gradients – compass)
what is declination in earth magnetic field
angle btwn magnetic and true north
what is inclination in earth magnetic field
angle with horizontal
what is intensity in earth magnetic field
strength of field
what animals use magnetic maps
robin, large yellow underwing moth, homing pigeons, sea turtle
what do pacific salmon use
olfactory beaconing
