lecture 19 - habitat selection, territoriality and migration Flashcards
define home range
area which animal regularly travels in search of resources but may overlap with those from neighbouring animals or groups of same species
define territory
area that animal or group consistently defends against conspecifics (or sometimes other species)
how to animals distribute themselves
in space and time with respect to some resource in environment
who created the IFD model
brown
what does the IFD model predict
how animals should first settle into habitats and the equilibrium frequency of individuals in different patches
what is the resource matching rule
the distribution of individuals at equilibrium matches the distribution of resources across patches
what does the IFD model predict the equilibrium distribution to be
the distribution at which if any animal moved from its current patch it would suffer a reduced payoff
at the equilibrium distribution in the IFD, how much food should the individuals recieve
approx the same amount
how do stress hormones affect spatail memory
impair it
when are territories feasible to defend
when the benefits are greater than the costs
what does territory ownership require
constant vigilance against both predators and conspecific intruders
why may animals share territories
to help get assistance in defense and often times the food loss is affordable since the intruder is less good at foraging than the owner
what is obligatory migration
annual migration
what is irruptive migration
migration when conditions are poor
what is partial migration
when only a portion of the population will migrate
