lecture 18 - communication Flashcards
what is communicatoin
transfer of info from signaller to receiver
what does communication involve
more than 1 individual
what do krebs and dawkins predict when communication is of the manipulator type
signals employed should be exaggerated
what do krebs and dawkins hyopothesize when communication is cooperative
natural selection should favor less exaggerated signals
what should natural selection favor in terms of communication and why
minimizing conspicuousness of comm bc signaling is costly
what form of communication is typical when finding/securing mate
vocal communication
what should natural selection favor in terms of communication and honesty
favors females that only pay attention to honest-signaler men instead of the manipulators (need to use the honest signals)
whats an example of honest-signaling in toads
deep croaks only produced by large male toads because of physiology and since they can’t fake those calls then female toads listen and look for deep croaks so they can get with the big guys
when are communication systems favored
when they help solve problenms that animals encounter in natural environments
what is the waggle dance
disovered by von frisch where bees perform a dance when coming back from foraging so the other bees learn the distance, direction and odors of flowers that need to be exploited
how does bee convey topographical info
the direction they are pointing in indicates food in respect to sun
how does the bee communicate how far away the food is
the length of the dance, ever extra 75 ms is additional 100 m from hive
what difference dances are used for different distances
round dance –> <20 m
sickle dance –> >20 m, < 60 m
waggle dance –> >60 m
how does temperature affect waggle dance
hive temperature during dev affects waggle dance.
warmed temps –> increased number of figure0eight, colder temps –> worse learned and less adept at communicating own ingo
how do ants communicate about foraging related ingo
chemical markers and sound production through vibrations
recruitment pheromones are placed along trails to leaves and then when they are in vicinity of leaves they rely on stridulation to determine the leaves on which to work
