Lecture 8: Cytoskeleton and Cell Membrane I Flashcards
Fluid Mosaic Model
Model of phospholipid bilayer as a thin layer of oily fluid containing membrane and integral proteins
Peripheral proteins
Found on outer and inner leaflets, can be removed from the phospholipid bilayer with detergents
Integral proteins
Embedded within the phospholipid bilayer, extracellular portion is completely glycosylated
Transmembrane proteins
Pass completely through bilayer, typically a channel protein or transporter protein
Uniporter
Transport protein that carries one ion/molecule unidirectionally
Symporter
Transport protein that carries two ions/molecules simultaneously or sequentially in the same direction
Antiporter
Transport protein that carries two ions/molecules simultaneously or sequentially in opposite directions
