Lecture 8: Alcohol Flashcards
What kind of drug is alcohol
CNS depressant
Binge drinking
male: 5 drinks in a row
women: 4 drinks in a row
Alcohol production
- sugar source
2.fermentation - distillation
- proofing
Factors that affect BAC
Sex, weight, genetics, consumption rate, before/after a meal
Alcohol dehydrogenase system
enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) converted to alcohol (ethanol) into acetaldehyde, acetaldehyde is converted into acetate
Microsomal ethanol oxidizing system
alternative pathway for the metabolism of alcohol (ethanol) in the liver, same procedure for alcohol dehydrogenase system
Liver conditions associated with chronic alcohol use
Fatty liver: deposits of fat cause liver damage
Liver fibrosis: scar tissue forms, more liver cell injury occurs
Cirrhosis: scar tissue makes liver hard and unable to operate properly
Acetaldehyde dehydrogenase converts acetaldehyde to
acetate
