Lecture 5: Carbohydrates Flashcards
Gluconeogenesis
occurs when a diet is deficient in carbohydrates, carbohydrates spare protein create new glucose from protein
What are ketones
produced by the liver from fatty acids during periods of fasting or when there is no carbohydrate intake
Insoluble vs. soluble fiber
soluble: dissolves in water, viscous, gel forming, fermentable. digested by intestinal bacteria
insoluble fiber: doesn’t dissolve in water, non viscous, can not be fermented by bacteria in the colon
Type 1 diabetes
autoimmune disorder, hyperglycemia due to deficient insulin, requires daily administration of insulin, cause is not know
Type 2 diabetes
preventable, insulin resistance, pancreas no longer secretes enough insulin, result of excess body weight, poor diet
